Genesis, Gemini and BlockFi Tangled in FTX Collapse

The FTX meltdown continues to reverberate as numerous cryptocurrency companies announce changes to their operations, such as pausing withdrawals, suspending new loans, and repaying them.
Unfortunately, crypto lenders are also on the verge of bankruptcy.

Genesis: Withdrawing Suspended Customers and Initiating New Loans

On November 16, the lending division of Genesis Global Trading, Genesis Global Capital, LLC (Genesis), a cryptocurrency investment bank, suspended new loans and repayments, as disclosed on its Twitter account.
According to the company website, there were a total of $2.8 billion of active loans at the end of the third quarter of 2022.
Genesis is looking for solutions for its lending units, including finding new sources of liquidity, and proposes to share the following plans with its clients.

Genesis, owned by Digital Currency Group (DCG), also owns CoinDesk.
CoinDesk was the first to report FTX’s poor financial health.
A leaked balance sheet from Alameda Research, a trading firm founded by Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), claims that billions of dollars worth of Alameda assets are tied up in FTX tokens.

Genesis had $175 million in assets on FTX, a failed exchange.
To strengthen its balance sheet, DCG took a $140 million stake in Genesis.

Gemini: Withdrawal Suspended from Loan Program

Cryptocurrency exchange Gemini also announced that it has suspended customer withdrawals of revenue-generating products due to the change in Genesis.
Gemini does not meet the exchange service level agreement period of 5 business days.
Genesis is the primary lending partner for the program.

The announcement highlighted that other aspects of Gemini’s business remain unaffected, including Gemini staking, which is part of the growth proposition product and separate from the earning product.

BlockFi: Bankruptcy is imminent

As previously reported, BlockFi was also affected by the FTX infection.
Lenders suspended withdrawals from FTX last week due to liquidity issues.
BlockFi has acknowledged that it has significant exposure to FTX and related entities, including obligations owed by Alameda.
They also have assets on the platform and undrawn lines of credit from FTX.
According to a recent update from a Bloomberg report, BlockFi is now preparing to file for bankruptcy within days.

According to the updated bankruptcy filing, FTX could have more than 1 million creditors, hinting at the huge impact of the collapse on the cryptocurrency industry.
