Prince Harry stopped by âThe Late Showâ with Stephen Colbert this week, where the two spoke about the royalâs new memoir, âSpare,â which was released Tuesday.
During his appearance on Tuesdayâs show, Harry slammed the âmost dangerous lieâ to come from copies of his book being leaked days ahead of its publication date.
The prince denied reports that he âsomehow boasted about the number of people that I killed in Afghanistanâ after some articles pulled quotes about the prince killing 25 people in combat.
The duke claimed the British âintentionally chose to strip away all the contextâ from accounts in his memoir and turn segments of translated text into âa salacious headlineâ
âIf I heard anyone boasting about that kind of thing, I would be angry. But itâs a lie,â the royal said. âAnd hopefully now that the book is out, people will be able to see the context. Itâs really troubling and very disturbing that they can get away with it. They had the context. It wasnât like, âHereâs just one line.ââ
âMy words are not dangerous,â Prince Harry explained, âbut the spin of my words are very dangerous.â
When the late-night host asked if it was âdangerousâ because Harry was now an âincreased target,â the Duke of Sussex answered, âAnd that is a choice that theyâve made.â
Harry explained to Colbert that âthe reason why I decided to share this in my bookâ was to âreduce the number of suicidesâ in the soldier and veteran communities.
âI made a choice to share it because having spent nearly two decades working with veterans all around the world, I think the most important thing is to be honest and to be able to give space to others to be able to share their experiences without any shame.â
In the book, Harry writes about the killings and says, âIt wasnât a number that gave me any satisfaction. But neither was it a number that made me feel ashamed.â
âNaturally, Iâd have preferred not to have that number on my military CV, on my mind, but by the same token Iâd have preferred to live in a world in which there was no Taliban, a world without war,â he explained. âEven for an occasional practitioner of magical thinking like me, however, some realities just canât be changed.â
During Mondayâs episode of âThe Late Show,â Colbert teased Prince Harryâs upcoming appearance.
The late-night host told audiences heâd read Harryâs memoir, âSpare,â which he joked was available on both âaudiobook and a commemorative plate.â
âItâs very enjoyable, quite emotional, quite revealing. Iâm going to have so much to talk about with His Harryness,â Colbert quipped.
Colbert is the Duke of Sussexâs last scheduled media appearance at the moment.
The royal also did interviews with Tom Bradby of ITV and CNNâs Anderson Cooper for â60 Minutesâ on Sunday, followed by a sit-down with Michael Strahan on ABCâs âGood Morning Americaâ on Monday.
